Supportive Housing

The National Coalition for the Homeless estimates that nearly 25% of single adults who are homeless also live with a severe and persistent mental illness. The disproportionate number homeless people with mental illness is not only a result of deinstitutionalization. Poverty and the lack of affordable options often make it impossible for people to find safe, affordable housing.

Supportive housing has been defined as "a successful, cost-effective combination of affordable housing with services that help people live more stable, productive lives (The Corporation for Supportive Housing)."

Community Involvement Programs has been involved in the supportive housing movement since 1991 when several single-family homes were purchased in St. Louis Park.  We currently provide a variety of permanent supportive housing options at 26 locations in suburban Hennepin County. Most of the supportive housing options are single family homes that provide shared living arrangements;  some individual apartments and efficiency units are also available.

An essential component of supportive housing is ongoing support. Individualized supports are provided by Mental Health Community Support staff. Supports are focused on helping people become active members of their community as well as assisting people in recovery goals. Tenants are expected to contribute 30% of their income towards housing costs. Rental subsidies, including Section 8 certificates, can be used to make up the difference between an individual’s resources and the current rent. Priority is given to individuals who are homeless.
