Adult Foster Care
Housing options are rarely "one-size fits all." Some adults living with mental illness are active members of their community with minimal or no formal assistance. Other men and women may need support or supervision every day, as well as overnight. Adult Foster Care is a housing option for adults diagnosed with a serious and persistent mental illness who require daily staff supervision, including overnight staff.
Community Involvement Programs currently operates six Adult Foster Care homes; each home provides a safe and supportive living situation for four individuals. Three residences, located in Minnetonka, Minneapolis, and Crystal, provide a home for women. Homes in Minnetonka, Minneapolis, and St. Louis Park are residences for men. Staff provide training and assistance with daily living skills and some minimal supervision of personal care. Staff also provide transportation within the community, as well as medication management. In the case of a crisis, staff are trained to respond.
Individuals living in Adult Foster Care must have a diagnosis of a severe and persistent mental illness. In order to be eligible for adult foster care, the person must be receiving services through a CADI waiver (Commmunity Alternatives for Disabled Individuals) or TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) waiver. Room and board costs are typically covered by the person's Social Security benefits. Group Residential Housing (GRH) funds may also be available to supplement Social Security.
